Political Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage that the president has secured an eighth presidential term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has stated that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over claims that he instigated "aggressive election protests".

No fewer than 4 demonstrators have been fatally wounded during clashes between security forces and opposition supporters since the presidential election on October 12, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya winning an eighth presidential mandate.

Issa Tchiroma maintains that he emerged victorious, a claim disputed by Biya's ruling party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Forceful measures by police and security officers on protesters have worried the global community, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union demanding caution.

Minister's Allegations

Earlier this week, Nji accused Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he labeled "unauthorized" protests leading to the loss of lives, and also rebuked him for announcing success in the presidential race.

He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators responsible for an rebellious scheme" will also face legal action.

Poll Figures

Paul Biya, who assumed office in 1982 and is now the most elderly national leader, obtained the 12 October vote with over half of the ballots, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Leader's Stance

Tchiroma Bakary is has not yet commented to the authorities' move to bring him to court, but he had earlier announced that he would not accept a stolen vote - and that he was fearless of being taken into custody.

On election result day, he claimed that security forces used lethal force on demonstrators present near his house in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 individuals.

Inquiry Announced

Earlier this week, the government official disclosed that an inquiry would be launched into unrest prior to and following the publication of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the criminals were killed," he stated, without giving a specific number of protesters who have been lost their lives in the clashes.

Nji added that several personnel of the police and military also sustained significant wounds.

Current Situation

Although the interior minister asserted the situation nationwide was now manageable, demonstrators remain active in various areas of the country, especially in these two cities, where protesters established barricades on Tuesday, and set fire to rubber on the streets.

Experts warn that the election-related unrest could lead the country into a leadership vacuum.
