Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
