During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress constructed from the past of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in episode 6 forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the case almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the series finale to come.
