The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” With the first season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus. About the Overwhelming Fan Response One could easily to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that. “It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show. “We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.” “Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes. The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus? Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of. “There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.” Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup. “My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.” Of course, why mess with the classics? “I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes. Pluribus is currently available on the streaming service.
